Amazon Marketing Tips

December 27, 2008

With the economy in a recession many publishers are seeing a sales decrease; however, some have seen substantial increases in their sales. One client of ours has seen sales increase by 30%.

Why? Part of the reason is that in 2008 they really focused on Amazon. Amazon is most likely one of your top 10 if not top 5 customers. Yet we find that many publishers don’t try to maximize their sales through this channel.

Here is a quick summary of actions that we advise our clients to take;

1. Focus on your title’s description. How does it compare to descriptions of other similar books. Is it better or worse? If its worse then update it.

2. Pre-publication marketing.Cover images and descriptions for pre-publication titles can substantially increase the number of backborders that Amazon receives for your title.

3. Encourage reviews. If a customer calls you to say how much they liked your book suggest that they submit a review to Amazon. If a conference attendee raves about your book suggest that they submit a review to Amazon.

4. Look Inside. If you book is good sign up for the Amazon Look Inside program.

5. Amazon Marketing Programs. If you have a really good book then look into trying out Amazon’s marketing programs for publishers.
